The State of Digital Marketing in 2026

For digital marketing in 2026, build a plan around what your team can verify: customer data, useful creative, the audience you can reach and the outcomes you can measure. AI, streaming and privacy changes affect those decisions, but a trend does not tell you which investment fits your business. Start with the buying journey and the operational work required to serve it.

AI-Driven Campaigns Need Defined Responsibilities

Separate assistance from execution. An AI tool drafting ad variations is different from a system publishing them or changing campaign budgets. For each use, define approved inputs, a person responsible for checking the output and the permission required before anything reaches customers. Test a bounded task before expanding it across accounts.

The NIST AI Risk Management Framework, released in January 2023, provides voluntary guidance for considering trustworthiness in AI use and evaluation. Apply that perspective to the actual workflow: inspect source accuracy, data handling and correction procedures. Our agency AI workflow guide turns those questions into a practical assessment.

For example, compare two approved versions of a product brief using the same facts and review criteria. Record drafting, checking and correction time, not just how fast the first version appears. Treat the result as evidence about that task rather than proof that AI improves every campaign.

First-Party Data Starts With Reliable Customer Records

A blanket assumption that Chrome has removed third-party cookies is incorrect. In its October 17, 2025 update, Google reaffirmed its approach to user choice for third-party cookies and announced plans to retire several Privacy Sandbox technologies, including Topics and Protected Audience. A plan based on older phaseout announcements needs a current browser and vendor check.

Audit the data you actually use: forms, customer records, purchases, service requests and consent or preference records. Establish the owner, purpose, retention process and destinations for each field. Do not collect additional personal information merely because it might be useful later. Direct collection still requires appropriate handling and does not make every downstream use acceptable.

Keep campaign identifiers consistent with customer records and test the path from inquiry to sale. A CRM connection is useful only when definitions, duplicates, cancellations and reporting dates are handled consistently. Ask what remains unobservable instead of treating a more detailed dashboard as complete coverage.

Privacy Requirements Belong in the Campaign Brief

Document the markets, audiences, data sources and vendors involved before creative and tracking decisions are finalized. Give the responsible privacy or legal reviewer the actual planned collection and sharing flows. Browser settings and a vendor’s product availability do not establish whether a particular use is appropriate for your organization.

For implementation, assign someone to test the approved choices across the relevant devices and regions. Check that measurement reports identify missing or modeled information clearly. Revisit the setup when forms, platforms or vendors change rather than assuming a launch review covers later work.

CTV and OTT Planning Needs Audience and Inventory Context

Streaming is a substantial part of television viewing. Nielsen reported on June 17, 2025 that streaming represented 44.8% of total TV usage in its May 2025 US measurement, compared with 44.2% for broadcast and cable combined. That is a dated viewing-share observation, not a measure of available ad inventory or a forecast of your campaign results.

Before buying connected TV, identify the publishers and placements included, the geographic coverage and how frequency is controlled. Ask whether reach is counted by household or person, how overlaps are handled and which creative formats are required. A completed video view and a new customer are different outcomes; report each in its own terms.

Creator Partnerships Need Clear Deliverables

Evaluate a creator’s audience fit, relevant work and proposed deliverables instead of assuming follower count predicts sales. Specify asset formats, publication dates, revision rights, usage permissions and how performance will be reported. Consider whether the content remains useful to the brand after the initial post.

The FTC’s guidance accompanying its 2023 Endorsement Guides addresses disclosure of material relationships between advertisers and endorsers. Include disclosure planning and review in the brief. A platform’s built-in label should not replace a review of the actual presentation.

The Measurement Imperative

Choose a business outcome, a reporting window and a source of record before choosing the dashboard. Attribution assigns credit under a model; incrementality asks what changed because of the activity. For example, Google Ads describes Conversion Lift as a controlled comparison and notes that it is not available for every account. This documentation was checked September 21, 2026.

Use operational reporting to spot broken journeys and understand lead quality. Where an appropriate experiment is feasible, agree its design and decision rule before seeing results. Where it is not, describe the result as observed or attributed performance rather than claiming a causal lift.

Where to Start an Agency Search

The national agency list and state pages for Texas, California, Florida and Washington can help build a shortlist. Confirm relevant capability through current work examples and a proposed team. Directory placement does not demonstrate that an agency has implemented every practice discussed here.
